Summon Spirits, NPCs and Friends – Summoning Pool Guide – Elden Ring

Multiplayer mode in Souls games is exceptionally creative yet incredibly difficult to get used to. Although it makes you feel like you’re playing a single-player game, other players can step into your world to help or harass you. As a result, such games don’t possess a pause option since the world is always on the go.

Elden Ring utilizes the same process with a few additions, which render the procedure all the more obtuse. It includes the Elden Ring summoning pool and how to use them to summon friends and NPCs.

Summoning pools are cross-shaped effigies located usually nearby Sites of Grace and Dungeons. They pose as satellite dishes and reveal the presence of summoning signs, permitting players to interact with them.

You can summon and play with your friends in Elden Ring by going to a summoning pool, interacting with it, and using the Furlcalling Finger Remedy. Then, you have to place your summoning panel in the summoning pool. However, you’ve to use the Spirit Calling Bell to summon spirits or NPCs.

Additionally, whether you wish to fight a friend, help, or annoy them, you need a summoning pool in the general vicinity so they can latch on to it.

Here’s a guide on summoning friends through a summoning pool and calling NPCs or spirits for help.

Summoning Players through a Summoning Pool in Elden Ring

Summoning Pool

In order to summon players through a summoning pool, you need to locate one, interact with it to activate it, and use a multiplayer item to reveal nearby summoning signs.

The consumable multiplayer item required to summon friends or strangers is Furlcalling Finger Remedy. You can purchase this item from merchants, craft them with the help of two Erdleaf Flowers or loot them from particular enemies.

Once players reach a summoning pool, they’ve to interact with it to activate it. Then, they should use the Furlcalling Finger Remedy to unveil adjacent summoning signs, which take the form of small rocks on the ground.

You can place your summoning panel at these sites with the help of gold and red effigies. Every color effigy symbolizes a unique intent, such as to be an enemy or an ally. Furthermore, players who summon other players into their world gain the title of Host of Fingers.

Mentioned below is the significance of each effigy in Elden Ring.

I. Red Effigy Signal

Red Effigy Signal

Keeping a red effigy signal as a summoning panel signifies the intent to play competitively or in PvP mode.

When you activate another player’s red summon sign, you invite them as an invader. Hence, they arrive with the objective to destroy you, the Host of Fingers, to receive rune rewards.

II. Golden Effigy Signal

Establishing a golden effigy signal implies the desire to play against or in co-op mode.

Upon activating a golden summon sign, you end up inviting a player to play co-operatively. Consequently, they enter your game with the goal to aid you, the Host of Fingers, in any encounter.

Summoning Spirits or NPCs in Elden Ring

Summoning Spirits or NPC

In Elden Ring, you can summon spirits or NPCs by obtaining the Spirit Calling Bell and pressing X or Square depending on your console. The Spirit Calling Bell isn’t an item players can equip, but it can merely sit in the inventory.

These spirits or NPCs serve the sole purpose of assisting you in battles against potent opponents. Moreover, these sidekicks come in various shapes and forms, including animals and humanoid. Unfortunately, you can only summon one type at a time.

Players need ashes of the fallen item to summon these spirits in Elden Ring, and they’re available throughout the realm of the game. Due to the same reason, summoned NPCs are otherwise called Spirit Ashes. Ashes of the fallen are guarded, dropped by opponents, or sold by merchants.

Besides, equipping specific ashes before using the Spirit Calling Bell summons a different spirit with different attacks and HP.

Note: Summoning Spirit Ashes is similar to using spells and requires FP. Generally, the stronger a spirit is, the more FP it’ll cost.

In addition, Spirit Ashes are summonable only in certain regions like during boss fights, open legacy dungeons, and enemy encampments. Upon stumbling across an opportunity to summon spirits, you’ll notice a glowing icon resembling an arch on the left of your screen.

How to obtain the Spirit Calling Bell in Elden Ring?

Spirit Calling Bell

To get your hands on the Spirit Calling Bell, fast travel back to the Church of Elleh after interacting with Melina and getting a Torrent in West Limgrave. You’ll come back to a passed-out Merchant Kale surrounded by an eerie fog.

Adjacent to the ruined walls, you’ll come across a peculiar witch who shall give you the Spirit Calling Bell.

Also, it’s crucial to carry out these steps at night because the probability of coming across the witch during the day is pretty low. If you’re still unsuccessful, it’s safe to assume that she won’t appear at the church. In this case, you can buy the Spirit Calling Bell and ashes in the Roundtable Hold.
