Unlocking The Secret Ending—The Last of Us Part 2

The Last of Us Part 2 has an ending which leaves you speechless and empty inside. The ending is emotional and it’s hard-hitting. But it isn’t the only ending in the game. When Grounded mode was added, a bit of a secret ending was also added in the game.

The Last of Us Part 2 doesn’t have a secret or a new cutscene but if players beat the game in Grounded mode—the mode which makes enemies more deadly and makes the overall game harder—they’ll hear Joel singing the song “Future Days” by Pearl Jam in the credits in its entirety.

The song is also sung by him in one of the most memorable cutscenes in the game. At the beginning of the game, Joel gives Ellie a guitar but before giving it to her, he sings the song for a bit before getting embarrassed and stopping. It’s a very heartwarming cutscene and the song hits even harder in the credits, after knowing what happened to Joel.

Are there multiple endings in The Last of Us Part 2?

Endings in The Last of Us Part 2

The Last of Us Part 2 features only one ending which shows Ellie back in her farmhouse after Dina and JJ left. She finds and plays Joel’s guitar, reminiscing about her last conversation with Joel, before leaving the guitar in the house and walking away.

The ending leaves Ellie’s story at a cliffhanger and Naughty Dog leaves the ending up to the fans for interpretation. But it’s speculated that she most likely went back to Jackson in hopes of reuniting with Dina and JJ and also making up with Tommy.

Is it possible to save Joel in The Last of Us Part 2?

Save Joel

There is no way to save Joel from getting killed by Abby. Joel needs to die in order to progress the story and hence start the cycle of revenge. Even with mods and glitches, his fate can’t be altered ,as his death is the driving force of Ellie’s motivation to kill Abby.

The game is about the cycle of revenge, and the consequences of one’s actions. Nobody is good in The Last of Us World. Everyone had to do what they did in order to survive, and that’s no different for Joel.

He saved Ellie because Ellie reminded him of Sarah, his daughter. But in saving Ellie, he killed Fireflies. So, he faced the consequences of his actions by getting killed by the Firefly’s daughter, Abby, thus starting the cycle of revenge in the game.

Will there be a Last of Us Part 3?

The Last of Us Part

There will be a Last of Us Part 3, but not anytime soon. In April 2021, Neil Druckmann, creative director of The Last of Us Part 2, announced that there is an outline for the story prepared. However, the game isn’t being actively developed as of yet.

But if you’re starved of The Last of Us content, The Last of Us Part 1 Remake has been released exclusively for PlayStation 5 and it’s also slated to release at a later date for PC. There’s also a Last of Us TV show coming next year on HBO with Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal as leads Ellie and Joel respectively.
