Intel’s “Arc” GPU to Challenge Both AMD and NVIDIA Graphics Cards

When it comes to graphics, Intel has tried its best but has always lagged far behind both NVIDIA and AMD. Intel discrete graphics cards just can’t seem to compete with the beefier external graphics cards from two of the biggest companies in the market. But, that may soon change as Intel has officially revealed its first discrete PC gaming GPU.

Titled “Arc”, Intel’s new graphics processor uses its Xe-HPG microarchitecture and will be designed for both desktops and PC laptops starting Q1 2022. While we don’t know much about the technical aspects of this new GPU, we know that it will be capable of mesh shading, variate rate shading, video upscaling, real-time ray tracing, and AI-powered super scaling.

This would mean that both Intel and NVIDIA will boast AI-powered upscaling while AMD, with their FidelityFX Super Resolution, will make do with non-AI spatial upscaling.

The launch of the Intel Arc brand and the reveal of future hardware generations signifies Intel’s deep and continued commitment to gamers and creators everywhere. We have teams doing incredible work to ensure we deliver first-class and frictionless experiences when these products are available early next year

Intel has released a trailer showing the pre-production silicon handling various games such as Forza 4, Crysis Remastered, Psychonauts 2, Days Gone, Metro Exodus, and others to prove the Arc’s abilities.

They seem to run perfectly fine, but keep in mind it was just a video, and no other information regarding the rest of the system running the game was made available.

The first generation of Intel’s GPUs has been codenamed “Alchemist,” but future generations have already been planned. These will be called “Battlemage,” “Celestial,” and “Druid,” keeping in line with their high-fantasy theme. We expect to get more information about them at a later date.

It’s still very early to gauge how much of an impact the Arc will have on the GPU market, given that NVIDIA holds such a large amount of the market share with their RTX 30-series cards and DLSS technology.

But, if Intel can provide next-gen level performance while also providing graphics cards to desperate PC gamers, it could give NVIDIA a real run for its money.
