Intel Core i9-13900 24-core Sample spotted with 3.8 GHz clock

Just a few hours ago, a CPU-z screenshot posted by @wxnod showcased the specs of an Intel Raptor Lake engineering sample. It appears as if the chip is a ‘Raptor Lake’ chip featuring 24 cores including 8 P-Cores based on the Raptor Cove and 16 E-Cores based on the Gracemont core architecture. The picture also shows the chip with 65W TDP and full desktop silicon configuration.

Now, we have got the leaked details confirmed as a full performance review has been published by Expreview for the CPU.

The CPU carries 16 MB of L2 cache for the P-Cores (2 MB per core) and 16 MB of L2 cache for the E-cores too (4MB per cluster of 4 cores). This gives us a total of 32 MB of L2 cache which combined with the L3 cache will offer us a total of 68 MB of cache which is supposed to be known as ‘Game Cache‘. These specs and the 65W TDP suggest that we are looking at a non-K part, the Core i9-13900.

As this is an engineering sample, the clock speed is just a mere 3.8 GHz compared to the 5.1 GHz max turbo of i9-12900.  We must keep in mind that the 3.8 GHz is at PL1 rating, so the clock speed should improve for the PL2 rating at around 200W. The final clock speeds should come nearly the same as the i9-12900, ie. about 5 GHz.

The same chip had also recently appeared within the SiSoftware Sandra performance preview, showcasing up to 50% higher performance than the Alder Lake Core i9-12900 but that chip was also an early sample.

Yesterday Intel confirmed that Raptor Lake will support Efficient Thermal Velocity Boost and per-core/package TVB overclocking support. Though it is still unknown if even non-K parts will support these features at 65W TDP.

With Intel featuring more L3 cache and AMD featuring 3D V-cache, we will have to see which one comes forward as the better option. Intel also has an upper hand as it supports DDR4 as well as DDR5 and the upcoming Z790 and H770 motherboards have some variants with DDR4 support giving an economic edge over AMD for upgrades. You can find more about these motherboards here.

Intel Raptor Lake should launch in the fourth quarter of this year and will be supported by the existing LGA 1700/1800 socketed platforms with both DDR5 and DDR4 DRAM support.
