Intel Demos Artificial Intelligence Upscaling Technology XeSS

In the past, better hardware was the only way to enjoy better graphics on your system. However, advancing technology has made it possible for even mid-tier hardware to offer almost high-end results.

NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technologies are AI-powered upscaling solutions that enable mid-level GPUs to provide better graphics with no additional cost to the hardware. Intel is looking at entering this race with their own technology dubbed XeSS, and they recently demonstrated how it works.

The demonstration came in the form of a video on the company’s YouTube channel. In the clip, 3S artist and technical art director Rens showed the current iteration of the artificial intelligence system.

Running on the upcoming Arc “Alchemist” graphics card, the demo compared 4K resolution with the upscaled equivalent. The video showed that it is possible to have an increase in visuals, which is also able to reduce graphical anomalies, especially in the distance

The technology itself is impressive, but Intel has quite the task ahead. Games like Hitman 3 and Death Stranding will support XeSS, but the rivals from AMD and NVIDIA are already out and ahead of the game.

Last year, AMD announced its FidelityFX Super Resolution supported 47 games, and it has recently announced that the second version of the upscaling tech will be launching soon.

NVIDIA has stated that its DLSS, Deep Learning Super Sampling, will continue to be compatible with more PC games as time moves on. But, Intel does have an advantage because XeSS is allegedly open source, similar to FSR, while DLSS is only compatible with NVIDIA RTX graphics cards.

Intel is also preparing to demo the Arc laptop this month as it is getting closer to the launch window. NVIDIA and AMD are the current major players in the GPU arena, and a third company joining the market will create even more competition but will provide customers with more options.

The Arc Alchemist was supposed to release in Q1 of this year, but Intel has pushed that date back. There is no official confirmation on the new release date, and many believe the delay is so Intel can make sure the drivers are ready.

So, the company does have some extra breathing space but will be left with more competition as competitors release new, more powerful products.
