Is it the end of God of War? Will there be a sequel? – GoW Ragnarok

After a wait that felt like an eternity, the long-expected God of War Ragnarok is now available for PlayStation players on PS4 and PS5.

Even though the game has been released only recently, God of War fans are already eager to find out if the saga of the Norseman comes to an end with GoW Ragnarok or if there’s more to come.

Cory Barlog (Creative Director, God of War 2018) and Eric Williams (Game Director, God of War: Ragnarok) have confirmed that Ragnarok will be the third and final game of GoW series. Since a sequel would take about five years, the developers feel that 15 years is big enough for narrating a single story.

Here’s more about whether God of War Ragnarok will see a sequel.

In an interview with the YouTuber Kaptain Kuba in 2021, Cory Barlog stated that there would only be a couple of installments in the Norse series of God of War. Furthermore, he also confirmed that God of War Ragnarok would be the conclusion of the Norse chapter of the God of War series.

Below is an excerpt from the above-mentioned interview.

“I think one of the most important reasons is the first game took five years, the second game, I don’t know how long it’s going to take…and then if you think, wow, a third one in that same [amount of time], we’re talking like a span of close to 15 years of a single story, and I feel like that’s just too stretched out.”

However, this statement contradicts what Cory Barlog stated in an interview with Kotaku in 2018. During the pre-release events of God of War (2018), Barlog ascertained that he had five more games planned for the Norse series, including the now-available God of War Ragnarok.

Although Cory Barlog mentioned that he had more plans for the God of War Norse series in 2018, his statements in 2021 in an interview with Kaptain Kuba complicate the franchise’s future. In the latter, he attributes the series as a “two-game” deal, but he still doesn’t offer clarity on whether his previous plans are now moot.

Sony typically decides whether they want to start working on a sequel based on the sales figures of their new entries. As a result, the Norse series of God of War isn’t going to be an exception, so the probability of a sequel to God of War Ragnarok highly depends on how well it does for itself.

Fortunately for all God of War fanatics, God of War Ragnarok is reporting solid numbers in sales. God of War (2018) broke the series’ record by selling 23 million copies globally, while God of War Ragnarok pre-orders are sold out already.

Moreover, based on Sony’s sales reports, God of War Ragnarok is now the best-selling installment in the history of the entire series within its first week of release. To put into perspective, God of War Ragnarok sold more copies in a day than God of War (2018) did in an entire week.

All in all, it’s becoming increasingly likely that players will get to see a sequel to God of War Ragnarok in the future.

Will Kratos live to see a possible God of War sequel?

Fortunately, God of War Ragnarok isn’t the end for Kratos, and he just might live to see a sequel, if there’s one. Also, it’s safe to assume that Sony’s Santa Monica Studios foresaw this possibility because (Spoiler Alert) Kratos doesn’t die in God of War Ragnarok.

In addition, with the help of Atreus, Freyr, and Freya, he gets rid of his biggest enemies, Thor and Odin. Hence, although it might seem like Kratos doesn’t possess a purpose adequate for him to feature in a sequel, Sony may have different plans.

However, the fact that Kratos is well and alive and may feature in a GoW sequel (if it happens) doesn’t mean he ought to remain the central character in the game. Once you navigate the God of War Ragnarok story, you’ll learn that Atreus might be on the path to his own spinoff God of War games.
