If a new job listing is to be believed, then FIFA 22 could be the first game in the franchise to have a fully online career mode.
EA has put out a job alert for an online software engineer that can help build a “networked play development team.” The company has also listed several of FIFA’s online services, including a cryptic hint to an “online career mode.” In both past and present FIFAs, Career Mode has been an offline experience, suggesting that FIFA 22’s Career Mode may be adding some form of online functionality.
FIFA fans have been disappointed for a while now with how EA treats Career Mode, accusing the company of dedicating far too many resources to its Ultimate Team mode instead. It’s understandable from a business sense, as Ultimate Team mode is quite possibly EA’s biggest moneymaker. But, with this new job listing, playing the entire Career Mode online with a friend may become a possibility.
EA adding co-operative/competitive seasons to FIFA 22 isn’t an unexpected scenario, considering F1 2021 is doing the same thing in the first-ever F1 titled being published by EA after it acquired Codemasters. It would give new life to Career Mode and may even convince players who don’t buy every version of FIFA to pick up FIFA 22.
The possibility also exists that the new “online career mode” is a standalone mode instead of it being integrated into the Career Mode we currently play. Nonetheless, it’s interesting to note that FIFA has something new brewing for the fans who don’t enjoy Ultimate Team mode.
We’ll likely find out about EA’s new plans for FIFA during EA Play Live, which is scheduled for July 22nd. EA had announced sometime back that they would be skipping E3 and be hosting their own digital showcase, but they will still be present at the E3 conference this year due to the upcoming Battlefield 6 reveal event.
