MSI to Feature Toolless M.2 SSD Installation in X670E and B650 Motherboards

Back in May, AMD unveiled its X670 and B650 chipsets for AM5 motherboards. These will be the home to upcoming Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. Motherboard manufacturers have since been improving their designs for the motherboards, and MSI is also one of them.

MSI’s latest features will simplify SSD installation as it allows for a toolless M.2 installation that is sure to help new users.

The design is called EZ M.2 clips combined with Screwless M.2 Shield Frozr and allows you to install M.2 SSDs under the Shield Frozr M.2 heatsink without having to deal with tools and screws, patent pending.

The M.2 installation is very simple, it basically uses a latch instead of a screw. The installation of the M.2 shield (the large SSD heatsink) is a bit trickier though, which was shown during MSI Insider Livestream

M.2 Shield Frozr heatsink can easily be removed and latched into place. Each M.2 heatsink on MSI’s motherboards comes with pre-applied thermal pads for good thermal transfer between the SSD device and the heatsink.

The method of M.2 SSD installation combined with the MSI Shield will be available to MSI’s MEG and MPG series, such as X670E MEG Godlike, X670E MEG Ace, and MPG X670E Carbon Wi-Fi. The rest of the X670 & B650 lineup will only feature EZ M.2 clips without a dedicated heatsink, the only exception being the Mini-ITX B650 series.

EZ M.2 clips is a simple installation method that doesn’t require using tools at all and can let you seat the M.2 device by sliding the clip in place. MSI plans to use these features in its entire upcoming portfolio of motherboards.
