Unity to Support NVIDIA DLSS Natively by End of Year

While ray tracing may be the hip new(ish) trend in gaming, it’s NVIDIA’s DLSS which really places their hardware ahead of the curve. The huge performance boost it provides allows even massive games run on comparatively meagre hardware.

Currently, DLSS is support by over 40 games, including Outriders, Crysis Remastered, and Nioh 2. But, with NVIDIA’s and Unity’s latest announcement, that number is set to grow significantly.

The Unity game engine is set to receive DLSS support with version 2021.2, which is slated for release before the end of the year. This means every new Unity game which can upgrade to the latest version of the engine will get native DLSS support, offering performance gains by which we could see framerates increase by as much as 100%.

There are many games which utilize Unity, so this update could provide DLSS to a ton of games. Fall Guys, Temtem, Ori and the Will o’ the Wisps, Wasteland 3, Phasmophobia, Outer Wilds, Subnautica: Below Zero, Call of Duty: Mobile, Boneworks, Superliminal, Untitled Goose Game, Risk of Rain 2, Hardspace: Shipbreaker, Disco Elysium, Escape from Tarkov, Genshin Impact – and that’s just scratching the surface. Not all of them would be able to upgrade to the latest version of Unity, but some might be able to, and certainly the newest Unity games.

DLSS does require relatively new NVIDIA hardware to function (RTX 2000-series or higher) so not everyone should expect a massive jump in the performance of their Unity games. But, if you are the owner of a fairly new NVIDIA card, 4K gaming with ray tracing may be in your future when it comes to Unity games.

NVIDIA DLSS Natively Supported in Unity 2021.2

Every Unity developer is going to want to add DLSS to their game. Mathieu Muller, senior product manager of high-end graphics at Unity, states that native DLSS support can be turned on with just a couple of clicks and the benefits are staggering, as the above video demonstrates.
