The Last of Us was rolled out with a fierce multiplayer mode called Factions. Consequently, it was surprising to see its sequel, The Last of Us 2, release without any equivalent.
Addressing fans’ concerns, Naughty Dog clarified it decided to direct every resource towards The Last of Us 2’s campaign mode. Hence, it was decided to release Factions as a standalone title when it’s ready.
Unfortunately, this announcement was made in 2019, and the studio went silent on the matter ever since. After waiting ceaselessly, fans of The Last of Us 2 can finally rejoice as Naughty Dog has provided an update on its online offering.
Commemorating its community celebration, Naughty Dog, through an official tweet and blog, declared that The Last of Us Factions is under development.
In short, we’re working on it – we see the community comments as many of you clamor for multiplayer and want updates. For now, we’ll say that we love what the team is developing and want to give them time to build out their ambitious project; we’ll reveal more when it’s ready!
The Company
The blog also stated that ever since The Last of Us 2 hit the markets, Naughty Dog has been expanding its roster of employees. As a result, the studio also has umpteen multiplayer-related job vacancies to fill.
The fact that there are openings for positions like Senior Monetization/Economy Designer and AI Programmer hints towards Factions housing microtransactions and AI enemies.
To that end, we’ve been busy growing our team inside the kennel since The Last of Us Part II launched and are currently in full swing of hiring for MP-related positions (hint hint), so if you or somebody you know qualifies for anything you see on our jobs page, apply!
As of now, we don’t know when The Last of Us Factions would release. It looks like the game’s still in its early stages, and Naughty Dog will want to take sweet time before launching this project.
About The Last of Us Part II
The Last of Us Part II is a an action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game is set 5 years after the events of the first game.
Players control Ellie on her journey for revenge against The Wolves, a faction which has set up in Seattle. On her journey, Ellie fights against survivors of the Cordyceps apocalypse and new variants of the infected. The game mixes elements of stealth and gun-play in vast areas, allowing players to approach the situation as they see fit. The Last of Us Part 2 received an overall positive reception and has gone on to win several Game of the Year awards.
