New PS5 Model Registered; Might Not Differ Much from Current PS5 Model

The PS5 remains woefully out of stock all across the world as console gamers (and scalpers) continue to snatch them off the shelves from wherever they crop up. And now, it seems Sony is working on a new model of the elusive new-gen console. But hold your horses, it might not be as “new” as you think.

This update comes thanks to tech specialist and business analyst Robert Serrano and a VGC report. According to Serrano, a Sony patent that points to an updated PS5 was officially registered on May 23. PlayStation enthusiasts currently get to choose between PS5 and PS5 digital edition, but this new model may simply replace the former.

As per the patent, the only notable change being made to this new model is the WiFi unit inside the console. The current WiFi module is called PSJ20H100 and it will be replaced by a new module titled AW-XM501. This base-replacement scenario is very reminiscent of the new red box Nintendo Switch that quietly replaced the launch model on the shelves.

The launch PS5 is marked with a CFI-1XXX model scheme, and since this new model is going to be called CFI-1115A, it is quite likely that a new PS5 could be on its way. However, since the changes are focused on the console’s wireless communications, don’t expect a PS5 Pro or Slim model out of this revision.

The patent states this improved PS5 will receive a peak antenna gain of 4.0/3.5dBi, which may technically reduce the wireless performance on the console when it’s connected to a router with a 2.4GHz signal. However, when connected to a 5GHz signal, the router will receive higher gain at up to 6.0/4.5dBi, a whole point over the current 5.0/3.5dBi. This may lead to a lower ping and lag for PS gamers who play on a 5GHz signal; but none of this is confirmed so, once again, don’t get your hopes up.

Sony seems to be focused on making improvements to their new hardware even though these improvements are not exactly needed at the moment. What is needed most is more pieces available for purchase but Sony seems to be hell-bent on enhancing the PlayStation experience; which might include a controller update that turns facial expressions into emojis.

Hopefully, once Sony is done with all these improvements, they will return their focus back to bringing more consoles to global markets.
