New PS5 System Software Update Available Now, ALLM Options added

Sony’s PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020 and has since been a major hit among console players. Like any other platform, PS5 has received routine fixes to smoothen the experience since its launch. And while some of those updates include significant changes while others are nearly unnecessary with regular fixes, the latest patch for the PS5 falls somewhere in the middle.

The update has been released globally. Hence all PS5 owners around the world can now update their hardware to the latest system software. The update mainly focuses on expanding ALLM support options while using PS5. Auto Low Latency mode(ALLM) allows your console to tell your TV to switch to a dedicated “game mode” when playing games. In other words, ALLM makes the overall gaming experience much better and ensures that you don’t see any lag or other interruptions while playing.

You can turn ALLM to automatic, which will allow your TV to automatically switch to low-latency mode while playing games. Or you can turn it off so that ALLM won’t be enabled, except during VRR (variable refresh rate) output. The problem is that this update might not help you, as ALLM is a feature available in most newer TVs.

ALLM support varies from TV to TV, and if you are on an older screen, the update might not affect your gaming experience at all. This is similar to the dedicated VRR patch for PS5 that rolled out earlier this year. Essentially, Sony is now adding expanded features to the PS5 that those with newer TVs will undoubtedly appreciate.

Sony provided the full patch notes of the update, as shown below.

Version: 22.01-05.50.00

  • If you’re using a TV that supports ALLM (auto low latency mode), you can adjust ALLM settings in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM
  •  If you select Automatic, your TV will automatically switch to low-latency mode while playing games.
  •  If you select Off, ALLM won’t be enabled, except during VRR (variable refresh rate) output.
  •  This system software update improves system performance.
