Amazon’s Beta of MMORPG New World is Quite the Hit

Finally, some new developments (pun not intended) on Amazon’s long-delayed MMORPG New World.

Amazon Game Studios kicked off a closed beta of the game on July 20 and threw players into the magic-riddled world of Aeternum for the very first time.

New World seems to have elements of both action-adventure games and traditional MMORPGs from a gameplay standpoint, so it has something going for everyone, which seems to have lured the crowds in.

According to SteamDB, the closed beta peaked at 200,856 concurrent players on July 25 in under a week of launch and has maintained a steady player count of around 150,000 since its debut.

Players joined by signing up for the closed-beta as testers or by pre-ordering the game through its website.

These figures contributed to making New World the sixth most popular game on Steam on June 25, beat only by super popular titles like Rainbow Six: Siege and Team Fortress 2.

Surely, this is a promising sign for Amazon as its game development team has failed to push out a game for a long while now.

Gamers have been mostly appreciative of New World so far, but many have also encountered a strange problem. Beta testers have reported that the game “bricks” many high-end video cards, particularly the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090.

The issue was caused by a glitch in the game’s beta client, which rendered in-game menus without a cap on max frame rate, thus frying video cards.

Amazon put out a statement soon after this issue began cropping up, announcing that a patch fix was underway and reassuring gamers that New World is safe to play.

New World has been subject to multiple delays throughout its development process. The game was initially supposed to drop in May 2020 but was then pushed to August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, even this revised date would not hold as Amazon decided to push the game once again to an ambiguous Spring 2021.

In February this year, Amazon finally confirmed an August 31 release date. Things slowly going back to normal combined with this very successful beta test indicate that we will see no more delays, and New World will indeed drop at the end of next month.

New World’s closed beta will end at 11:59 p.m. PT on Aug 2.
