The OLED Nintendo Switch Has Finally Been Revealed!

Nintendo has been happily plagued with rumors and speculation surrounding what new hardware they may release, given that the Switch is four years old, which is usually the halfway point for many systems.

The company had been able to side-step and avoid discussing any hardware-related info so far, but that never stopped people from theorizing what the next Switch may possess. Well, Nintendo has finally revealed a new model for the Switch, but it isn’t what most people expected.

Nintendo revealed the Nintendo Switch OLED Model in a new trailer on July 6th and stated that it will ship on October 8th for $349.99.

Nintendo Switch - OLED Model - Announcement Trailer

This new version of the handheld is very similar to the original model but has some key differences. The OLED version comes with 64GB of internal storage, enhanced audio, and a new wider dock with LAN support. But, the most significant update that comes to this new Switch is the gorgeous new OLED screen.

The handheld’s overall size remains the same as the original, but the OLED screen is slightly larger at 7 inches compared to the original 6.2 inches. The OLED screen will also boast improved picture contrast but remains locked at a resolution of 1280×720. With rumors of the Switch coming with a 4K panel and an NVIDIA Lovelace GPU, this announcement does fall short of those expectations.

Another update is the battery life, something the newer Switch models have improved upon compared to the original 2017 launch versions. Fortunately, even with a larger and more powerful OLED screen, the new Switch model will offer players an estimated 4.5-9 hours of playtime.

In addition, Nintendo has stated that all current accessories will remain compatible with the new model for anyone looking to upgrade, so you won’t have to buy them all over again.

But the question remains, is this the final hardware revision for the Switch? Given all the missing features from the rumored “Switch Pro,” some wonder if the real upgrade is still coming later this year or early 2022.

Another theory is that Nintendo may be looking to move to the next successor of the Switch in a few years. But, regardless of rumors, it seems that those looking to buy a Switch have various versions to pick from come October.
