Nintendo Switch Out-Performs Gaming Giant’s Sales in the US

The Nintendo Switch has returned to being on top of the US sales charts. After the Xbox Series X and S’s brief stint in March as the top-selling console, the month of April saw the return of the Switch to the top.

The Switch has now passed Sony’s Playstation 4 in terms of lifetime sales in the US, grabbing the PS4’s spot as the 4th highest-selling console.

Remember that the PS5 did lead April in terms of dollar sales, which tells us that retailers may now have more of the consoles in stock during April. However, the Switch did lead the month in terms of unit sales.

While the Switch is topping US sales charts, it still has a long way to go worldwide. Nintendo predicts another 21 million in global sales for the fiscal year of 2023. However, the US sales may help Nintendo climb the global sales charts.

Alongside the Switch, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was the best-selling game of April. However, Elden Ring holds the title of the best-selling game of 2022 and it is also the best-selling game of the last 12 months.

Nintendo does warrant appreciation for these great sales numbers.

But, the Switch doesn’t have any competition outside of the Steam Deck in terms of the portable handheld market.

Sony did have the PSP, which sold more units than Nintendo’s own 3DS over its lifetime. They did have success with their first attempt in the market, which must make Nintendo’s sales numbers painful for them to see.

Sony does have enough resources to counter both of these with a potential successor to the Vita. However, Sony’s decision to completely abandon the console market seems like a missed opportunity in retrospect.

The Switch sales are also the by-product of its portability and form factor, as well as its low price. The PS4, being a stationary console, is more likely to be shared between multiple players. The Switch, on the other hand, will probably be bought by each person.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella tweeted that overall consumer spending across the video game market in April 2022 (including hardware, accessories, and content) declined by 8% compared to last year. Total sales for this month were $4.3 billion.
