NVIDIA Ampere GA102-250 GPU to Feature on GeForce RTX 3090 Graphic Card

Initially meant for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card, it has now been revealed that the NVIDIA Ampere GA102-250 GPU SKU will feature on GeForce RTX 3090.

The news accidentally came out when a Hardwareluxx’s Forums member tried to install a water block on GeForce RTX 3090. Upon taking the Graphic Card apart, a laser engravement changed from GA102-250 to GA102-300 GPU could be seen clearly.

This indicated that Nvidia has started repurposing the GA102-250 chipset for RTX 3090, leaving GA102-225 GPU for RTX 3080 Ti cards. The potential reason behind this repurposing could be the drought of high-end graphics cards in the market.

Compared to what the rumors previously suggested, the scenario has changed a lot. The RTX 3090 was supposed to feature GA102-300-A1 GPU with 82 SMs, while GA102-250-KD-A1 was expected to house 78 SM units.

Currently, what we know is that the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will now utilize the GA102-225 GPU with 80 SMs. The GeForce RTX 3080, on the other hand, stands second to it with the GA102-200-KD-A1-GPU alongside 68 SM units.

Moreover, it cannot be verified if the Ampere GA102-250-KD-A1 GPU variant’s performance would be as good as the 300 variant. However, the naming scheme suggests that the GA102-300-A1 GPU would be better than the GA102-250 chip.

The question that now comes to our mind revolves around the future of GA102-300 GPU and how it’s going to be utilized? Well, the safest assumption is that the chip would likely be used to power Nvidia’s upcoming flagship graphic cards.

With the rumored Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphic card now featuring the Ampere GA102-225-A1 GPU SKU, it’s fair to say that it has undergone a spec-change.

Here are the specs that Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphic card is expected to pack:

  • One can expect it to sport the PG132-SKU18 PCB design.
  • The GA102-225 GPU with 10240 cores and 80SM would be utilized
  • 12 GB of GDDR6X memory.
  • 19 Gbps of memory speed.
  • Bandwidth of 912 GB/s.
  • 384bit memory bus
  • 320W TGP

Rumored to roll out in May, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is likely to be priced at $999.
