Oddworld Inhabitants showed new footage of their latest game Oddworld: Soulstorm during PlayStation’s State of Play event yesterday. They also gave a release date for the title.
Oddworld: Soulstorm will release for the PS4 and the PS5 on the 6th of April 2021. Those who purchase the PS4 version will receive the next-gen update at no extra cost, and PS5 owners can download the game for free with a PS Plus subscription. The game will remain free from April 6th to May 3rd.
Oddworld Inhabitants also showcased new gameplay footage which showed new mechanics. The video showed Abe and other Mudokons working their way across a variety of environments. Just like the previous instalments, players will control Abe, the accidental hero of his people who is leading the revolution against the Glukkons.
Game director Lorne Lanning called this game a “2.9D platformer”. What this means is that while the game itself is a side-scrolling platformer, the use of camera angles allows the game to show off far more details in the environments.
The title is also going to use some of the PS5’s advanced hardware to improve player immersion. Haptic feedback is going to be one of the ways the game brings you into the heart of the action, literally. With the capabilities of the DualSense controllers, players will be able to feel Abe’s heartbeat get faster and slower depending on how intense of a situation you’ll encounter.
Another new feature is the ability to loot dead or sleeping enemies. This will allow players to farm certain resources required to craft items which will help Abe along his journey. There are also a slew of new traps to be wary of, including falling rocks and ancient traps.
Aside from these new features, it’s the same Oddworld mechanics that fans love. Players are given free rein on how to deal with a particular situation, choosing the chaotic route or to be a pacifist. Abe’s mind control powers will also make a return, giving you an edge over your enemies, but not all of them. There are also far more Mudokons to save this time around, so players are going to have their tasks cut out for them if they plan to get them all!
