Blizzard Takes Down Overwatch 2 Servers for Surprise Maintenance

The turbulence just doesn’t seem to end for Overwatch 2. After a disastrous launch filled with DDoS attacks and minor design issues. Even the actual gameplay disappointed a few veteran players. Hopefully, Blizzard’s next move will improve things.

Blizzard announced that it would be taking down Overwatch 2 for some extended maintenance for an hour on Friday.

The servers will remain offline for an estimated 60 minutes. The length of downtime may be shorter or longer than estimated. This is the second time Blizzard has taken down Overwatch 2’s servers, the first being on Thursday. The announcement was released just two hours before the servers went down.

Overwatch 2 players have faced a series of issues– log-in errors, server connections, in-game purchases, cross-platform account merging, and more technical problems. Clearly, Blizzard has a lot to uncover. An earlier post from the studio did list out the critical problems.

A post from Blizzard earlier on Thursday provided a lengthy list of areas where Overwatch 2 still needs improvement. However, the repairs are interesting since the game was launched just a while back.

The maintenance came as a surprise since the one before it was “scheduled” by Blizzard customer service representatives. This could mean the team discovered an urgent issue that needed to be resolved as soon as possible.

The server maintenance was done during peak hours in North America. This could be because Blizzard preferred normal hours to prevent its developers from working overtime or in the middle of the night. That way, the problems could be settled during the quiet hours in other regions like Europe and Japan. However, this is unlike Blizzard’s optimal maintenance schedule.

Players will have to take an hour off from playing, but hopefully, most of the bugs and glitches will be aloof from the game. Some fans also took to Reddit to share their woes and pains of being an Overwatch fan.

Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

About Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 is an upcoming first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The sequel to the 2016 hero shooter Overwatch, the game is intended to have a shared environment for player-versus-player (PvP) modes with the first game while introducing persistent cooperative modes. A major change in PvP was to reduce team sizes from six to five, which required several characters to be reworked.

Overwatch 2 is set to launch as free-to-play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in early access on October 4, 2022. It will feature full cross-platform play.
