PlayStation is Considering Expanding to the Mobile Games and Apps Market

Coming from the Sony corporate strategy meeting held on May 26th, PlayStation will officially start to make big moves into the mobile gaming sphere in the coming years.

Chairman, President, and CEO of the Sony Group Corporation Kenichiro Yoshida gave a speech that outlined the company’s direction for 2021. Yoshida highlighted PlayStation mobile gaming as part of his speech which addressed how Sony would respond to the ongoing trends like social interactivity and service-based products.

The speech also included talks about hardware such as the PS5 and other technology, how the company plans to expand its social capabilities, new plans for future IP collaborations, and a whole spectrum of future Sony endeavors.

Fate/Grand Order was specifically mentioned as a successful example of how Sony would plan to implement IPs into mobile games. Yoshida stated that PlayStation IPs would eventually be “deployed on mobile” but did not mention any specific franchises.

He ended the speech by mentioning that he plans to increase Sony’s entertainment consumer base to 1 billion people by expanding Sony’s efforts in these three spheres.

President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan then spoke after Yoshida. He further explained PlayStation’s collaborative efforts and its expansion into mobile. He stated that the company had found “some early success” experimenting with mobile games, with the end goal being to provide “more choice to gamers.”

Ryan highlighted the extensive catalog of PlayStation original IPs that could see mobile transitions and said that the company is exploring the market with “some wonderful PlayStation franchises”.

We don’t know exactly which PlayStation IPs will find their place on mobile, but fans can expect some new and old ones to appear. If Sony is to take a leaf out of Nintendo’s book, the latter used their major franchises to garner attention and downloaders.

Games such as Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp have seen varying levels of success, while others such as Fire Emblem Heroes and Pokemon GO are just as popular as ever.

The announcement of PlayStation looking at the mobile gaming sector may be concerning to some fans. However, Jim Ryan assured investors that it is “just one of the areas we are exploring.” So, we doubt we’ll see any fan-favorite PlayStation IPs become mobile-only any time soon.
