New System Software Beta with UI Options Rolling Out for PlayStation

Sony will be releasing a new system software beta for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 later today. This new update will include slight changes to how party chats function, UI improvements, and accessibility features. The beta will be sent out to a select few users who will be notified via email when the update is ready for download.

While it is unfortunate that not everyone would be able to test out the features, PlayStation confirmed in a blog post that the improvements currently being tested would be available to everyone sometime later this year. They also clarified by saying that not all the improvements might make it into the final update and that some could be changed significantly over time.

Regarding the party chat feature on the PS4 and PS5, the beta will introduce “Closed” and “Open” parties. Friends will be able to join open parties without invites, while closed parties will be invite-only groups.

The beta will also be tweaking the PS5 UI with some helpful features. Those who store many games on their system will be happy with the new additions. Players will be able to see 14 games on the home screen and also pin games, so they are not lost in the list.

The Trophies UI will also be upgraded, changing the trophy card’s background from solid black to an image of which kind of trophy the player will be able to unlock. The cards will also display progress towards specific trophies, but this would only be available on supported games.

Some new accessibility features will also be added with the beta, including more languages for the PS5’s screen reader, including Russian, Arabic, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and Korean. Mono audio for headphones is also being tested, giving players the option to have the same audio from either ear cup.

US and UK PS5 users will also be able to test out a voice commands preview, allowing them to search games, movies, apps, and setting using just their voice. So, if you’re hoping to try out the new features this beta will bring, keep an eye on your inbox for the acceptance mail.
