2022 to be the Year of PlayStation Tournaments for the PS5

Competition and gaming go hand-in-hand. Even Pong, one of the earliest games, was based on competing and winning against an opponent. Technology has evolved by leaps and bounds since then, where we can now play in massive rooms with 100+ players from across the globe. PlayStation is planning on fuelling that sense of competition with a new property this year.

Jim Ryan, PlayStation CEO, hosted a presentation this week on what the company had planned for the immediate and the distant future. Along with the official reveal of the PS VR2, another exciting bit of information shared was the arrival of PlayStation Tournaments on the PS5. This was introduced for the PS4 in 2016 but has yet to make its way onto the PS5.

We’re also planning to introduce a new ‘Tournaments’ feature on PS5.

Beyond the announcement itself, very little information was shared regarding how the upcoming feature will function or look. It ideally should mean the option to compete against many players in a variety of different PS5 games with rewards. No exact date was given as to when this feature would launch, just stated that it would be sometime later this year.

Sony had filed a patent for online tournament integration last year, so this news goes hand in hand with the previous leak. It could also mean that brackets may be generated through the PlayStation Network instead of relying on games to come with their own competitive functionality.

This would also open up the possibility of having tournaments in other games not yet considered to be in the Tournaments feature.

So, if you felt like you needed even more competitiveness in your games and didn’t want to rely on the games themselves to pit you against an equal foe, PlayStation might be able to do that for you before this year is over.
