PS5 Sales Have Already Surpassed Sales of PS Vita, Wii U in the UK

It is a known fact that the PlayStation 5 is the fastest-selling console in US history. But in the UK, the console has broken a whole another record.

Despite massive shortages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and scrupulous scalpers, Sony’s new-gen piece has outsold the Wii U, PlayStation Vita, and Sega Dreamcast.

And when we say ‘outsold’ them, we mean the PS5 has already sold more than the other three consoles sold in each of their lifetimes in the UK.

This update comes from Christopher Dring – head at GamesIndustry.biz – who shared this latest PS5 milestone on Twitter earlier today.

It seems to be on point as Video Game Chronicles also recently mentioned that more PS5 units have made it into the UK.

As for the number of PS5 units sold, VGChartz recently reported that global sales of the PS5 are currently at about 6.8 million units.

But it’s worth noting that while the PS5 is selling phenomenally well, it wouldn’t have taken much for it to beat the sales of the Wii U, the PS Vita, and the Sega Dreamcast as these consoles were deemed commercial failures for their parent companies.

In fact, the failure of the Sega Dreamcast was so severe, it forced Sega to exit the hardware market altogether. Keeping in mind the success of the PSP, even Sony considers the PS Vita a failure despite the fact that the handheld has garnered ‘cult classic’ status.

A fact made evident by the company’s decision to shut down its digital stores.

Nintendo, on the other hand, has seen tremendous success for pretty much all of its releases, except for the Wii U. For instance, in early 2018 alone, Nintendo Switch had sold over 700,000 units in the UK, shattering the lifetime sales of the Wii U by quite a large margin.

Should Sony manage to maintain this impressive trajectory in sales, the company could be on track to beat its very own PS4 which remains the 4th highest-selling console of all time.

This would be no mean feat, however, as the pandemic is still raging across the globe along with a notorious GPU shortage. Additionally, there is the new-gen competition to consider i.e., Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S.
