NVIDIA “Completely Compromised” by Hackers’ Recent Cyberattack

Hackers are always doing what they can to benefit themselves. Whether it’s in games like Warzone, where they can shoot you through walls and have zero recoil, or in the real world, where they steal company secrets for bids on the cyber black market. A recent cyberattack against NVIDIA has left the GPU company reeling, and the hackers have demands.

The hackers reported that NVIDIA was “completely compromised” by the hackers, and they have acquired 1TB of data. Parts of NVIDIA’s business have been offline for two days, says a report from The Telegraph.

The hacker group responsible for the attack is Lapus$, who gained access to NVIDIA’s servers for a week, with admin rights. According to VideoCaardz, the group has pulled at least 1TB of data from NVIDIA and is now holding it hostage.

An NVIDIA spokesperson told The Telegraph,

We are investigating an incident. We don’t have any additional information to share at this time.

A cyber security expert, Alan Woodward, spoke with the publication and elaborated on NVIDIA’s steps since the attack. He says that the company has probably shut down its systems to stop further damage.

The ultimate concern is that somebody may have put something in one of the software updates. They’ll be going through trying to make sure to see if there’s any indication that anything has been changed in their software that they then shipped to their clients.

Lapus$ claims it will leak or sell the data if NVIDIA does not contact them and remove the mining limiter on the company’s RTX 30-series GPUs. Allegedly, the data obtained includes schematics, drivers, firmware, and more. NVIDIA had implemented the limiter to curb the shortage issues of the graphics cards over the last two years.

While speaking to Bloomberg, another spokesperson from NVIDIA said,

Our business and commercial activities continue uninterrupted. We are still working to evaluate the nature and scope of the event and don’t have any additional information to share at this time.

We will have to wait and see if NVIDIA will capitulate to the demands of the hacker group, but cyberattacks like these will get worse if they do.
