Is Ethan Winters Dead? – Resident Evil Village Post Credits Explained

From Lady Dimitrescu’s glamour, Heisenberg’s insanity, and Mother Miranda’s evil doings, Resident Evil Village saw quite the turn of events for our tattered hero Ethan Winters. Not only did Ethan find out the truth about his existence but the conclusion of the epic Mother Miranda fight led to Ethan’s “supposed death” due to a big blast. But the real jaw dropping moment for us fans was the post credits scene involving Rose.

The end credits scene saw the beautifully grown up Rose, visiting her father’s grave. Her grieving was interrupted by an agent from Chris Redfield’s Special Forces. He jokingly called her “Eveline” making us assume that Rose’s power could possibly be comparable to or even beyond Eveline’s. As Rose and the agent are seen zooming out of the camera’s view in their car, a familiar figure seems to be approaching the car from a distance.

Who’s the person? What was Mother Miranda’s goal? Here’s everything you need to know about Resident Evil Village’s cryptic ending.

But be warned! This will contain a lot of spoilers, so if you haven’t finished the game, I suggest you finish it before learning about the ending.

1. Who is Mother Miranda?

Mother Miranda

Mother Miranda’s human timeline dates back to 1918 when the Spanish Flu had taken millions of lives. Miranda had lost her daughter to the flu and tried to kill herself inside a cave when she came across the true source of the mold – Megamycete. She had become an immortal being, thanks to its regeneration properties with the same plans to regenerate her dead daughter.

Miranda had become a shapeshifter taking any form she wished and started experimenting with the mold to make her perfect daughter. Eveline was one of Miranda’s failed experiments. While Rose was a success thanks to Ethan’s body completely accepting the mold.

i. Why did Mother Miranda take Rose?

Mother Miranda took Rose from Ethan as Rose was the perfect experimental human that had full control over the mold’s power. She wanted to regenerate her dead daughter Eva and felt Rose as the most suited experiment.

Back in Resident Evil 7, when Ethan was fed the mold by the Bakers, his body had completely absorbed it making him inhumane. His daughter Rose has the same powers due to Ethan’s blood flowing through her veins, making her just what mother Miranda may be looking for.

Although, later we find out that Rose escaped Mother Miranda’s clutches and Ethan had to take the fall for his family. But a certain scene has still made us question the truth about Ethan’s death.

2. Who is the Figure in the Post Credits Scene of Resident Evil Village?

Ethan in the Post Credits Scene

A figure can be seen approaching Rose’s car as it drives down the road during Resident Evil Village’s ending scene. That figure is none other than Ethan Winters as detected by the game’s photo mode option. Although his face is completely unrecognizable to us since our hero was always in first person point of view, the half bitten bandaged hand confirms his existence.

Well, now the question arises, didn’t Ethan technically die in the blast to save his family? Let me explain that as well.

ii. Did Ethan Winters Die?

Ethan Winters’ final showdown with Mother Miranda had left Ethan learning the truth about himself. He decided to destroy the mold’s existence and sacrificed himself to save his family. Meaning he died in the blast.

But, the post credits scene tells a different story. It is evident that the photomode reveals that Ethan is still alive and keeping an eye out for his now teenage daughter Rose.

Although not confirmed, we can assume Ethan Winters is still alive and he did not die in the factory blast.

If you’re wondering what truth had Ethan learned about himself? Here’s the TL;DR.

iii. What Did Mia Reveal to Chris about Ethan?

Mia Explaning to Chris

We know, who Chris had killed back in Ethan’s home was not Mia but another form of Mother Miranda. Now, the real Mia revealed that Ethan technically could never die as his body was now part of the Megamycete mold.

Remember that one time when Lady Dimitrescu sliced off Ethan’s hand in the Castle and he just put it back on like a puzzle piece?

Yeah, that was the mold working its magic. Ethan had become an immortal being thanks to the Bakers’ back in Resident Evil 7 and had the regeneration power like Eveline and Rose.

Destroying the mold’s source meant Ethan’s regeneration would also decay. So, he did what any father would do, sacrifice his own self for the family making the ending of the game a tear-jerker.

Though, the post credits scene was definitely a delight for us RE fans that thought our unsung hero died in vain, some of you might still be questioning the future for the Winters.

iv. Will Ethan Winters Return?

How to kill Karl Heisenberg?

We know Ethan Winters is very much alive from the post credits scene in Resident Evil Village. But, we are unsure about his return to the series. The post credits scene ends with a quote “The father’s story is now done”, meaning Capcom might be planning for Rose to be the next main character instead.

Ethan Winters’ return is not yet confirmed by Capcom. Ethan Winters might have a secondary role in Resident Evil 9 or not even make an appearance in the game.

Getting to the final piece of the Resident Evil puzzle, we get to the involvement of the Umbrella Corporation and its logo shown in the Rose’s Ceremonial Site.

Umbrella Logo on Altar

I’m sure every one of us saw the Umbrella logo while putting Rose’s parts into the Altar in Resident Evil Village. Believe it or not, Oswall Spencer, the founder of Umbrella was actually inspired by the logo already adorning the village and decided to make it his company’s official logo.

Spencer had visited the village for some medical research when he came across Miranda and her wild experiments of resurrection. This was a kickstarter to the chain of events leading to every Resident Evil experiment gone wrong, like the discovery of the T-virus in Africa leading to Resident Evil 5.

Resident Evil Village also showcased the return of BSAA and their involvement in the bio-weapon fights.

4. Involvement of BSAA and Resident Evil’s Future

While Ethan Winters blew up the factory and destroyed the mold source, Chris Redfield escaped with Mia and Rose only to find a dead BSAA on the scene. This BSAA agent was also a bio-weapon. Meaning, the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) that once fought against the Bio-weapons made by Umbrella Corporation, were now using bio-weapons themselves.

Chris Redfield, who was a BSAA soldier in the past, was quite unhappy with the way this organization had turned out and immediately instructed the helicopter to make their way to the official BSAA headquarters in Europe.

Now that Chris Redfield is aware of BSAA’s involvement, Resident Evil’s future might see a DLC or two from Chris’ POV, trying to fight the new evil that stands in the humanity’s way i.e., the BSAA.

Here’s hoping more details about the past of the Umbrella Corporation or Mother Miranda’s experimentations will be revealed in some new DLCs for the game. Till then we just have to grab onto every little hint and details we might have not yet discovered in the game.
