Resident Evil Village Ending Explained: Post Credit Scene Meaning

The latest title in the Resident Evil franchise has been a huge fan favorite and might as well be the most popular game of the series. The game packs a lot of twists and turns, which in turn lead to many unanswered questions.

Capcom has mixed the story with the arc of the game’s lead, Ethan Winters. With RE Village being the eighth title in the series, all these story arcs can be a little confusing. Especially the ending. If you were like me, who felt lost after finishing the game, hold on as I quench your curiosities.

1. Resident Evil Village Ending Explained

The ending takes place after Ethan reunites with Chris just at the end of Heisenberg’s factory. IF you don’t remember the last time Ethan saw Chris, Chris was shooting the brains out of Ethan’s wife and kidnapping Rose. Quite a bad last impression.

At the end of Resident Evil Village, Chris explains that he actually shot Mother Miranda, who was impersonating Ethan’s wife, Mia, in order to snatch away Rose. Chris killed the fake Mia and took in Rose to protect her.

So, it wasn’t Mia who died; in fact, she is alive and well. Mia was taken prisoner by Mother Miranda as she took her place. We come face to Mother Miranda in the end as her entire plan comes to light.

2. What’s Up With Mother Miranda?

Mother Miranda is the main villain in Resident Evil Village. She lost her daughter Eva to the Spanish Flu. Grief-stricken, she came upon the Megamycete (the source of the mold), whose properties made her immortal.

It turns out that Megamycete has the souls of all who died, so technically, it also contains Eva.  She just needed a suitable body. We now come to the Village, where Mother Miranda has been experimenting. Rose was supposedly the perfect vessel to bring back Eva. Thus Mother took the place of Mia to kidnap Rose.

Now Chris killed the fake Mia and took Rose to be safe, right? Well, no, Mother Miranda resurrected herself, broke into the truck, and finally did get to Rose. Then when we finally meet Mother Miranda to face her on the battlefield, it does not go too well for Ethan.

Mother Miranda literally rips Ethan’s heart out, leaving him pretty dead. While dying, Ethan sees Eveline in his vision, and we get quite a lot of revelations. Eveline has power over the mold; we also get to see a vision in which we see how Jack Backer killed Ethan Winters in RE7. Thanks to Eveline’s mold, Ethan got the ability to heal himself. All this while we get to play Chris as we rescue the real Mia.

Just after our vision, Ethan comes back to fight and finish Miranda. After making sure that Mia and Rose are safe, he also destroys the Megamycete (and himself in the process).

3. Is Ethan Winters Dead?

It looks like Ethan Winters really died in Resident Evil Village. We also see future Rose visit a grave and final text saying, “The father’s story is now done.”

If this is not enough foresight to indicate the franchise’s future, I don’t know what is. However, we can never be sure in a game based on resurrections and bioweapons, especially after that cheeky last scene.

4. Who Was the Man in the Last Scene of RE Village?

When Rose and the agent drive off, someone is walking in the opposite direction. It is quite hard to tell who that might be, but thanks to modders who exploited the photo mode, we glimpse into the man’s identity.

In the photo mode, it is clear that the man in the post-credits scene is Ethan Winters. This either means that he was resurrected, or Capcom just used his model as a placeholder because no one was supposed to actually see the identity of this character.

5. The Future of Rose

Resident Evil village is setting Rose up for a protagonist arc in the upcoming games. Though there are a lot of other characters, we would like to play as well.

It would be interesting to see if we would have Ethan back in the future games or not, maybe as a side character?

6. Umbrella Logo in Resident Evil Village

The Umbrella logo is on the center of the altar that you visit quite often. Once you add all the pieces, you get the giant’s chalice.

Oswell Spencer, the founder of Umbrella Corp., visited the Village when he was a medical student. He got inspired by the Giant’s Chalice and formed the logo of his company after it.
