Rockstar Games to revolutionize water physics in Grand Theft Auto VI

Fans and enthusiasts of the Grand Theft Auto Franchise have been waiting patiently for the release of the next game in the series – GTA VI, even though it has been almost ten years since GTA V launched.

Rumors and leaks have been few and far between. With only little pieces of speculation reaching the players every couple of months, the latest bits of information could be substantial.

A recent leak on Twitter has suggested that Rockstar Games is looking to step up the realism of water with the help of their in-house RAGE engine. They are looking to improve on Nvidia’s Wave Works feature, which can be very expensive, and want to set the bar high along with improvements in water physics across the gaming industry.

Rockstar insider Aleix Venturas is the man behind this leak. He goes on to say that a game of the magnitude of GTA VI that has been in development for years will require Rockstar to be at the “forefront of game design technology.”

According to the leak, the improvement in the water physics of GTA VI will be unprecedented and far ahead of the current level of water physics that we see in general AAA titles.

Generally, water in games exists somewhat in an elementary fashion with changes to movement, vision, and the character’s sense of gravity. On a large scale, the body of water isn’t affected as a whole in-game, in stark contrast to what we see in real life.

A ripple or a splash can be rendered, but the body of water is seen to remain static in most cases. Aquatic games like Subnautica and Sea of Thieves have inspired Rockstar.

They are working on water physics at a granular and elementary level. While Nvidia’s Wave Works feature has shown earlier that it can be expensive to perfect water physics, Rockstar doesn’t seem to be holding back on the financial side in their quest to deliver the most immersive water physics.

Another reason to believe in this leak is the jump in the quality of water and surface tension from GTA V to Red Dead Redemption 2. With a recent fan-made map leaked for GTA VI, based on the Vice City, it will reportedly be 2x the size of GTA V.

On a closer look, the bottom half of the map reveals a primarily aquatic region, starkly contrasting to GTA V, which barely had any major aquatic region.

Trying to meet the standards of gamers, enthusiasts, and graphics nerds who want the best possible experience out of the game, Rockstar will have to take such measures and improve the game to an unprecedented level to satiate them.
