Rumor: GTA 6 To Have A Modern-Day Setting

For a while now, because there has been no update from Rockstar, fans have been debating the hell out of what GTA 6 will bring when it finally releases. While we wouldn’t recommend that you believe everything you read or hear, it’s always good to keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the ground because the following might have a pretty good chance of turning out to be true.

Well known leaker and industry insider Tom Henderson, who has been thoroughly involved in providing unconfirmed updates for Battlefield 6, dispelled rumours that GTA 6 will be set in the 80s by tweeting that the game will have a modern day basis.

As mentioned before, this has great potential to be accurate as two of Rockstar’s previous GTA outings, GTA 5 and GTA Online, have systems which incorporate modern-day elements. So, it would be counterproductive for Rockstar to forego systems that they’ve worked so hard to build just to take a new game back to the Vice City era.

In addition to the above, there’s also a recent job-listing from Rockstar India that points to a modern-day setting for the game.

Rockstar’s Indian offices are on the lookout for a Mixed-media Animator and under the job description, they have listed that applicants should be willing to “create content for in-game media for our game world” and “work on multiple platforms to create multiple styles of content for in-game media.”

Fans have zeroed in on the words “in-game media” in the job posting, theorizing that it could be a clue to the game’s potential setting. Fans think that in-game media may refer to websites and TV shows that could feature within the game’s world. If this is indeed the case, and bear with us as we calculate here: the internet didn’t become mainstream until the 90’s with the births of the World Wide Web and the first web browser. So, in speculative conclusion, GTA 6 has to be set sometime after 1990.

In the 8 years since GTA 5 released, plenty of rumours about its follow-up have flown around but none of them have seen any kind of confirmation. Furthermore, this is not the first time a job-listing has set-off gamers into speculation; earlier this year, a job listing from 343 Industries prompted gamers to think that they’re getting a sequel to Halo Wars 2.

So back to waiting for official news we go… sadly.
