NVIDIA’s Upcoming RTX 4090 Could Require a Whopping 600W of Power

Technology never takes a break. Even with the ongoing semiconductor shortages, the next generation of GPU hardware is approaching the tail-end of the year. NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 Ti is set to release this month, and AMD may also be unveiling some new cards, but very soon, both will be moving on from their current generation of hardware. And this could come with a hefty price for the end consumer.

As graphics cards become more powerful, they also need more power to operate. A recent rumor not only affirms that for NVIDIA’s upcoming 4000 series cards but also sets a very shocking number. A recent report has emerged from Videocardz, referencing tweets from Greymon55 and kopite7kimi, both well-known leakers of GPU info.

The report states that the upcoming NVIDIA RTX 4090 may require a lot of power to run. Allegedly, the TGP, or Total Graphics Power, could have the card needing 600W of energy, which is far more than what PC gamers are currently accustomed to.

Currently, the most powerful card on the market, the NVIDIA RTX 3090, requires 350W, while the upcoming RTX 3090 Ti will need 450W. Compared to the competitions, AMD’s upcoming RX 7900 XT, allegedly releasing towards the end of the year, requires 480W at most. So, if the rumors are to be believed, NVIDIA’s next flagship card could be the hottest one in the market in terms of sheer power consumption.

Being an XX90 model, it is targeted towards the higher end of the industry whenever the next generation begins. The company is also spending billions to secure the components needed for the RTX 4000 cards, most likely to work against the ongoing deficit.

With Intel also coming into the market, AMD and NVIDIA will have another competitor. It’s still too early to say how powerful the next NVIDIA high-end cards will be, but those who do plan to get one should also give good thought to the cooling component they will undoubtedly require.
