Analyst Claims PSVR 2 Won’t Roll out This Year; 2023 Release Likely

When Sony laid out its plans to capture the virtual reality frontier through the PlayStation VR 2, it did not shed any light on its expected release window. However, many were of the notion that the company’s next step in its VR offering would appear in time for this year’s holiday season.

But unfortunately, a tweet from a big-timer in the supply chain of VR components has put an end to the hopes of all those eagerly expecting the next-gen headset in 2022 by implying that it may roll out later than expected.

According to a tweet from Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Sony has delayed the release of its PSVR 2. The analyst believes the next-gen VR headset won’t roll out before 2023 because of a shortage of components.

Young also mentioned on Twitter that VR displays’ shipment would rise by 50% in 2022 in spite of production postponement from Sony and Apple.

An article on the DSCC website further went on to say that 80% of all VR display shipments are heading towards Meta. This, ultimately, does not leave a lot of space for the enormous allotment that a VR headset launching within a matter of a few months needs.

While Sony is yet to confirm PSVR 2’s official release date, there is a chance that there’s truth to what Young’s been stating. It’s because the industry analyst is a highly credible source who’s not known for advocating fake or outlandish claims.

The postponement also makes sense from Sony’s point of view as fine-tuning PSVR2 further would provide game developers who plan to utilize this upcoming VR tech with more time to make adjustments and fully use its potential.

The cherry on top is that a 2023 release could also mean that instead of just the Horizon game, there would be more than one title launching on the PSVR 2 at launch.

So, this delay shouldn’t necessarily be taken as a negative piece of information because, in the grand scheme of things, it might lead to the creation of an even better device.
