AMD Clears the Air About Ryzen 7000 Demo in New Interview W/ PCWorld

The AMD keynote at the Computex 2022 event was an eye-opening experience. The Mendocino, 600-series motherboard, AM5 platform and many more products were unveiled.  While we did get a glimpse of the Ryzen 7000 series, it was very limited and left us wanting more.

Lucky for us, PCWorld recently did a “The Full Nerd” interview with Robert Hallock and Frank Azor from AMD. The panel discussed important highlights from the keynote as well as shed some light into the Ryzen 7000 CPU testing.

A vague doubt in our minds was the Ghostwire: Tokyo game demo with the 16-core Ryzen 7000 engineering sample. It ran at over 5 GHz+ frequency.

Hallock confirmed that the test did not involve any modified cooling. The CPU was actually supported by the 280mm Asetek liquid cooler. The CPU was equipped with two 16GB DDR5-6000 CL30 memory.

The sample was running stock frequency and surpassed the 5 GHz mark with most of its threads. While the frequency demonstrates a range between 5.2-5.5 GHz on multiple cores, it is eventually dependent on the game and its demands.

AMD emphasized that the sample test was not special in any matter and did not overclock.

The higher frequency was a result of higher TDP caused by higher PPT, as explained by Hallock. The reason for increased PPT power was to increase multi-core frequency, also shown in the Computex slides which claimed a “170W” power consumption.

The Ryzen 7000 series will be released well into September. So we can expect a few more details coming soon. The Zen 4 CPUs have a lot of potential and it will be interesting to see their efficient performance.
