Samsung Odyssey G9 to Get Mini LED Overhaul

Samsung’s 49 incher gaming monitor, the Odyssey G9, is a beast and a beauty at the same time. So when the Korean manufacturer announced that it is upgrading its popular ultrawide monitor to a new Quantum Mini LED Panel, many gamers are already having fantasies of how it’s going to perform.

While MicroLEDs and OLED panels are still not a norm for PC monitors, the 2021 model of the Odyssey G9 is taking a step in exactly that direction. We can expect to see enhanced black levels and greater backlight zoning control for an overall prettier picture.

At just 1/40th the size of conventional LEDs, Quantum Mini LEDs allow for ultra-fine light control. With deep blacks, bright lights, and upscaling technology smarter than any Samsung TV has ever offered, Samsung Neo QLED delivers an ultra-realistic picture—whether you are watching a football game, or playing one on your gaming console.

Samsung Neo QLED is the Quantum LED technology with a Neo Quantum Processor which seems to be currently limited to TVs. The G9 is said to incorporate both Quantum Matrix Technology and Quantum Mini LED, both in a high-res gaming panel.

No date has yet been announced for the new version of the G9, but it’s planned for release sometime this year. With the existing G9 currently retailing for $1,479, it’s not going to be a very economical option.

But, for the price of two PC monitors, you do end up with about the same proportions. The G9 features a screen resolution of 5120×1440.

Aside from this monitor, Samsung also announced a partnership with AMD to develop the first TV with support for AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro standard (the one with HDR). The first model to arrive with this feature will be the Samsung Q70A 4K -the Frame TV.

FreeSync Premium Pro offers:

  • Colour and luminance certification
  • HDR capabilities
  • At least 120Hz at minimum FHD resolution
  • Low framerate compensation
  • Low latency with SDR or HDR

So, if you’re Team Red and a living room gamer, this is something you should probably keep in mind. Nvidia cards will also support some FreeSync monitors and TVs, so while you can expect support for GeForce, it isn’t guaranteed.
