Yakuza has been one of Sega’s iconic series since the first title in 2005. The game has been immensely popular in Japan, but the same cannot be said about the rest of the world. However, things changed for good when the series softly rebooted with Yakuza: Like a Dragon in 2020.
Now, Developer RGG Studios and Sega have announced the 8th title in the series, Yakuza: Like a Dragon 8. The game will feature Ichiban Kasuga and Kiryu Kazuma as dual protagonists.
Yakuza 8 will use the turn-based combat system introduced in Yakuza: Like a Dragon as opposed to the action-RPG combat of previous Yakuza video games. Kasuga returns for the sequel following his first appearance as a protagonist in Like a Dragon.
Moreover, long-time protagonist Kiryu returns sporting a somewhat uncanny new hairstyle, likely indicating he has taken on a new identity following the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
The scale of the game is really big, it’s going to be the largest game to date. The game is about Kiryu, who has all of his past on his back, and Ichiban, who has all of the future ahead of him. We felt we had to bring back Kiryu for that theme.

Ryu Ga Gotoku studios also took the opportunity to announce two spin-offs, one of which is a fully localized remake of Yakuza Ishin, one of the previously Japan-only games. The other title will be Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.
This canonical spin-off will take place between the events of Yakuza 6 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon and lead into the events of Like a Dragon 8. The game will explain how Kiryu has returned back to the franchise.
Like a Dragon 8 will arrive in 2024 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, and Steam, as the studios insist that the game is still in its development phase.
About Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is an upcoming Sega developed game. Usually, the Yakuza franchise created games with beat ’em up combat style but now with the arrival of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, things will change. The eighth arrival of the Yakuza series will house role-playing gameplay.
In the series, gamers usually play as Kazuma Kiryu but now instead of him, the plot of Yakuza 7 will revolve around a new protagonist named Ichiban Kasuga. Also, instead of Tokyo inspired Kamurocho, the game will be set in Yokohama district.
The storyline of the Yakuza: Like a Dragon is about revenge where Kasuga is betrayed by his bosses after spending 18 years in prison for their wrongdoings. Thus, play as Kasuga in this open-world game to ensure that in the end, it is justice that prevails!
