Sony Announces New Midnight Black and Cosmic Red DualSense Controllers

As reported just a few days ago, Sony has announced swanky new colors for the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller. Next month, the new-gen console’s standard white and blue controller will be joined by two galaxy-themed colors – Cosmic Red and Midnight Black.

The Midnight Black is something special as it deviates from PS5’s white and blue theme and takes us back to PlayStation’s old black and grey color schemes that dominated Sony’s first four consoles. Although, the Midnight Black comes with a slight change – the controller has two shades of black instead of one uniform shade of black (with grey buttons) all across like the DualShock.

The Cosmic Red has a refreshing and almost wine-red look to it; a shade which hasn’t been seen on any PlayStation controller before. Like the Midnight Black, it too follows a two-tone color scheme except the black comes together with red on the main panel. With the transparent buttons like in the Midnight Black, it makes for a pretty striking combination.

In Sony’s own words, the two-toned color choice is a significant pivot from their previous controllers. According to Leo Cardoso, who is a part of Sony’s design team, the goal behind the colors was to find designs that will surprise and entice fans. And since the PS5 has a very space-oriented look, designing galaxy-themed controllers seemed like a natural step to take.

Even from a technical standpoint, the DualSense takes things in a new direction for PlayStation as it brings innovative features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. So, bringing in an all-new color palette into the mix seems like the right way to drive that point home.

To showcase the capabilities of the DualSense, Sony held a showcase that dived into how developers are using the controller’s new features to their advantage. The showcase featured Returnal and a bunch of other PS5 titles. You can read all about it on the PlayStation blog.

The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red DualSense controllers will begin to hit shelves next month. The exact date of arrival will vary by location.
