PlayStation is Skipping Gamescom 2022 Expo, Sony Spokesperson Confirms

Every year gamers eagerly wait for Summer, as it gives an opportunity for new game releases on stages of big events like E3 and Gamescom. With E3 2022 already being cancelled and certain big publishers already quitting Gamescom this year, it looks as if summer 2022 won’t quite be that exciting.

While big names such as Nintendo, Activision Blizzard and Take-Two Interactive have already confirmed that they won’t be attending Gamescom 2022, Sony is the newest addition to this list.
A Sony PlayStation spokesperson confirmed the news to German gaming outlet Games Wirtschaft that Sony will not be attending Gamescom 2022.

This news is surprising as there are pretty big games coming out for PS5 this year and Sony is one of the most important and largest exhibitors at Gamescom every year. Gamescom 2022 was announced in March this year as a physical-digital hybrid event running from August 24 through August 28 in Cologne in the Koelnmesse international trade fair and exhibition center.

Sony showcased some major gaming releases during the last in-person Gamescom event, which was in 2019. This included games such as Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, The Last of Us: Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Marvel’s Iron Man VR for the PlayStation VR.

Although fans will surely miss the notable presence of these three big companies, over 250 companies are expected to attend Gamescom 2022 according to its organisers. As Gamescom 2022 is the first physical event since the pandemic hit, publishers and developers might be reluctant to release their games during the event as the mode of meetings and releases has changed in the last 2 years.

We already have confirmation from publishers like Bandai Namco, THQ Nordic and Koch Media that they will be attending the event.

The event will launch with Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 23. It will then open for trade visitors, press and content creators on August 24, ahead of four days of public access for ticket holders.

With many big games still planned to release this year, we will have to wait and see how, where and when Sony will release its games. Although if more and more publishers decide to omit these events, we might see an altogether different way in how games are released every year.
