PlayStation VR2 Announced, Features & Details Revealed by Sony

Virtual reality is the new frontier game developers are now trying to understand and eventually, conquer. Bringing players into the game, allowing them to interact with the world and see it all around them, is the goal of many game studios and companies. We now have Sony’s next step in their virtual reality offering: the Sony PlayStation VR2.

The announcement was made just a little before the start of the CES trade show. There have been some brief mentions, teasers, and leaks of the headset and controllers, and now Sony is finally ready to show players what they can expect from the PS VR2.

The headset’s specs alone are impressive, making it a potentially excellent competitor to the currently available headsets like the Valve Index. The headset’s OLED display will provide 4K HDR resolution of 2000×2040 per eye, 90/120Hz refresh rate, a 110-degree field of view, and adjustable lenses for a better fit to different eye spaces and pupillary distances.

The PS VR2 also comes with a very unique feature: eye tracking. Sony says the device will accurately measure the players’ eye movement, allowing for that data to be used in-game as ‘additional input for the game character.’ This is a pretty new feature for VR, as both the Oculus Quest 2 and Valve Index lack this ability.

The PS VR2 has been designed to work strictly with the PS5 console and is, unfortunately, not a wireless headset. But, there have been some improvements made compared to the previous iteration.

There is now a single cable, which should make playing and moving around easier. The PS VR2 has inside-out tracking, just like the Oculus Quest 2, so players won’t have to set up sensors in the room to use the device.

The PS VR2 will also come with its own controller, called the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller. It has been designed to provide unique sensory feedback and will most likely use technology present in the PS5 DualSense controllers.

The headset will have other special features, such as haptic feedback in the headset, allowing players to ‘feel’ when things fly by their head in-game or when a character’s pulse is elevated.

Sony has provided no official release window for the PlayStation VR2, but they have promised more information will be revealed soon.
