Fans of Roguelikes are going to love this one!
In a recent tweet by Spelunky’s Creator Derek Yu, the official release date for the PC version of Spelunky 2 has finally been revealed, and it is coming sooner than expected!
Roguelike is a particularly interesting genre of video games, at least for me!
They have two basic characteristics that define them; randomly-generated levels and a perma-death feature, meaning that once you die, you’ll have to start over from the beginning.
Now these two features alone make the genre feels as one being targeted to only a certain type of players in the community. But the truth is, in reality, far from so.
These games are built to make you face an obstacle, die from it, learn from your mistakes, try again, and overcome the obstacle to further your progress!
This endless cycle of trying and dying pushes the player never to give up and force a kind of player-growth through the in-game character’s growth.
From starting and struggling a lot to essentially becoming a god at the game and surpassing everything the game expects from you, the entire process it quite poetic, in my opinion.
And this process is part of what makes the genre so endearing to so many people!
Spelunky is the one game that seems to incorporate this design philosophy better than most Roguelike games.
A close second that comes to mind would be Motion Twin’s Dead Cells, but that’s a tale for another day.
Though our focus is on the former’s sequel, first revealed two years ago and now just a few days away from hitting the shelves!
When is Spelunky 2 coming out?
According to Derek Yu, the PlayStation 4 version of the game will be releasing on September 15th, while the PC version of the game is cited for a September 29 release on Steam.
It seems that the Steam page of the game is yet to be updated, as it still shows the game as “Coming Soon.”
Of course, it’s not that I’m complaining about it, as the release date’s announcement alone has left me feeling pretty elated already, but I suppose a page update will serve as concrete proof for the game’s release!
Regardless, I, along with many others, cannot wait to get my hands on the title and see what kind of experience the developers have in store for all of us!
