Street Fighter 6 crosses 1 million players and Capcom gives away in-game gifts

Capcom’s latest title Street Fighter 6, launched last Friday on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

With official figures unavailable now, the game crossed 70,000 concurrent players on Steam at one point.

Street Fighter’s official Japanese account tweeted that Street Fighter 6 has surpassed 1 million players, and the combined sales exceeded 50 million copies. As a token of thanks, developers Capcom gave free titles to every Street Fighter 6 player, which reads “Just Picked Up SF6.”

To put the statistics into context, Street Fighter 5 managed to sell less than 500,000 copies in the first week after launch. Also, the peak concurrent player for Street Fighter 5 was under 15,000.

The studio Capcom sees this as a huge win. While Street Fighter 6 makes up just a tiny fraction of the total, it has considerable potential to become one, if not the most, successful game in Street Fighter history.

The hype around the game has been unparalleled and unheard of for any title in the franchise. There were tons of viewers for Street Fighter 6 live streams.

There are also in-person tournaments being organized already, like at DreamHack Dallas. Community-building ensued simultaneously, with both in-game and in-person community-building events.

This is understandable, given that in Street Fighter 6, the developers have revisited the game’s core and built it from the ground up. There’s a brand-new control scheme, new core fighting mechanics, in-game commentating, and new foundational pillars.

Powered by Capcom’s in-house RE Engine, the new title features three distinct game modes: Fighting Ground, World Tour, and Battle Hub. Visuals for every aspect have been enhanced in addition to the game’s mechanics.

Per an insider source, Capcom’s target sales for Street Fighter 6’s lifetime is about 10 million copies. And quite clearly, it’s on the right path to reach that figure.
