Super Mario 3D All-Stars Receives A New Patch

The collection of three of the best Super Mario 3D games, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, has received a patch that removes some of the blocky debug artifacts that players discovered in Super Mario Sunshine.

On paper, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is supposed to be everything that a fan of Super Mario could ever ask for from Nintendo. Featuring a collection of three of the best Super Mario games ever made, that is, the legendary Super Mario 340348, its equally well-received follow-up, Super Mario Sunshine, and of course, the absolutely charming Super Mario Galaxy.

These are titles that developers should try and look up to when developing not just 3D platformers but video games in general, as these three titles tick almost every box regarding what makes such video games fun to play.

Unfortunately though, many were displeased with the way Nintendo decided to handle this collection.

Despite becoming the second best-selling game of the year on Amazon less than a week after it was announced, and almost two weeks before it was even released, many noticed how the collection was marketed as a ‘remaster’, but little to nothing had changed in the games.

Not to mention, the iconic “So long, Bowser” was missing from Super Mario 64 in this collection, replaced by a simple “Bye-Bye!” whenever Mario throws Bowser into the air!

Now I don’t know about you, but as one comment on YouTube righteously said, “This will go down amongst gamers as one of the greatest tragedies in history”. Gay Bowser will be missed but will never be forgotten.

Regardless, many improvements to the game have now landed through the 1.1.0 update for Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

One notable improvement, which unsurprisingly enough, was left out of the patch notes was the removal of the debug blocks in Super Mario Sunshine, in the second secret area of Bianca hills where cubes showing the paths of flipping platforms were appearing unnecessarily.

Other than that, the patch also brought with it the inclusion of the much needed inverted camera options and the inclusion of support for the GameCube gamepad, which is another welcome change as it allows players to play the game as it was originally meant to be.

Anyhow, here’s all the patch notes that were released by Nintendo:

  • Players can now invert the camera controls within all three individual titles.
  • Super Mario Sunshine now supports the Nintendo GameCube controller (sold separately). Players can now play this title using the same controls as found in the original GameCube release.
    • The Nintendo GameCube controller for Super Mario Sunshine is supported only in TV mode.
    • You’ll need the GameCube Controller Adapter (sold separately) to use this controller with your Nintendo Switch system.
    • The Nintendo Switch Lite system does not support this controller option.
    • All button displays within Super Mario Sunshine will not reflect the Nintendo GameCube controller.
  • Other general fixes have been applied to improve overall gameplay across all three titles.

That said, if you’re looking for a way to experience the best of what 3D Super Mario has to offer, I’d suggest saving some bucks and playing all three games on an emulator.

However, if you still wish to buy it, remember that the collection will only be available until March 2021, so get yourself a copy as soon as possible!
