GTA 5’s legacy has continued to grow over the past eight years since the initial launch, and the game has jumped three generations of consoles. Recent events have hinted that Take-Two and Rockstar are planning on remastering some of the series’ previous games.

These hints come in the form of DMCA takedowns issued by Take-Two. The studio has been on the warpath against mods for its games, causing them to be removed by their creators.

The latest site to receive this claim is LibertyCity.net. The site has several mods that bring elements from older GTA games into newer installments and mods that aggregate those elements and various maps from different games.

A statement on the site reads, “Take-Two Interactive requested to remove modifications for GTA games from LibertyCity. The publisher claimed these mods with DMCA strikes.” Eight mods have been deleted in total, all of which have been listed on the site. These takedowns by Take-Two have been fueling rumors that the studio is working on remasters for games like GTA San Andreas and Vice City.

The first to be hit by these takedowns was a reverse-engineered GTA 3 and GTA Vice City project. Thankfully, the creators of that project have been able to restore it thanks to a counterclaim.

Take-Two’s failure to react to the counterclaim meant that the project could be distributed and downloaded. But, if there are GTA remasters in the works, the project will likely be taken down again.

Take-Two confirmed this week that it was working on new revisions of three previously released titles but did not reveal what those were. It could very well be one or more games from GTA’s back catalog. Until we get news of the remasters, all focus is on GTA 5’s enhanced edition, which is slated for release this November.
