New Witcher Medallion in Teaser Image not from School of Wolf or Cat

The Witcher fans have been starved a long time for the reveal of a new mainline game in the franchise. While there have been other games related to The Witcher universe like the card games Gwent and the live-action adaptation of the original books received its second season.

But it has been almost seven years since the release of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Geralt’s story may be completed, but there is much more to explore in the world of The Witcher.

So, it came as no little happiness for Witcher fans that developer CD Projekt Red revealed a teaser image for a new Witcher game currently in the works. Many have labeled the game as The Witcher 4, but CD Projekt Red has since confirmed that this will not be the project’s official name. We don’t have any official confirmation of the game’s title, and the studio is only dropping small teasers here and there.

A new piece of information has now dropped on the new Witcher title. The teaser image revealing the game showed a Witcher medallion given to all those who pass the Trial of Grasses. While it was clear to many that this medallion did not belong to the School of the Wolf, some thought it might be from the School of the Cat.

Global Community Director Marcin Momot has now confirmed that the medallion belongs to neither of these schools and is instead from the School of the Lynx.

The School of the Lynx is one of the lesser-known Witcher schools compared to Wolf or Cat. This School pops up mainly in Witcher fan-fiction, meaning the games will likely stray even further from the original world of the books.

Given the tenuous relationship between the author of the books and the fun, it might be the safest for CD Projekt Red to steer clear of the source material. Some of the die-hard fans may even consider the Witcher trilogy as fan-fiction.

As the School of the Cat is primarily out of the picture, it seems less likely that the story would revolve around Ciri and her exploits after The Witcher 3. The teaser image was accompanied by the tagline “A New Saga Begins,” so it is possible that all characters from previous games may be absent in these upcoming titles.

Along with some story details, CD Projekt Red has revealed small bits of information on the game’s development cycle, including that they will try to avoid crunch with the new Witcher title.

About The Witcher 4

The Witcher 4 is a placeholder name for an upcoming game from CD Projekt Red based in The Witcher universe. It has been labeled as a new saga and will most likely not feature Geralt of Rivia as the protagonist.
