Tetris Legend Jonas Neubauer Dead At 39

It is a week of mourning for Tetris fans as they pay tribute to a legend of the game, Jonas Neubauer. The seven-time winner of the Classic Tetris World Championship and a popular Twitch Streamer has passed away at the age of 39.

Jonas Neubauer, a seven-time seven world champion and popular Twitch streamer has passed away at the mere age of thirty-nine. According to the statements posted on his Twitter Profile and Discord, he succumbed to a sudden medical condition on January 5^th .

It’s with a heavy heart that we deliver the terrible news that Jonas has passed away from a sudden medical emergency.
He was the absolute best. We are devastated, overwhelmed with grief, and we already miss him dearly.

In an interview with Tetris.com, Jonas shed light on his history with playing Tetris. He said,

“I first started playing Tetris on my uncles’ Macintosh at the age of six or seven.”

“The simplicity of it intrigued me and I also enjoyed the fact that I was against the game itself and not another player. My older brothers were great at chess and I never liked playing them.”

On a competitive level, Neubauer first competed and won the Classic Tetris World Championship in 2010. He retained the “World Champion” for three more years (2011, 2012, 2013) before coming second in 2014.

A born champion, he made an epic comeback by winning the championship again in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He even set two world records, one for the highest score and one for the fastest time to 300,000 points in 2018!

Jonas was also a popular Twitch streamer and would often post his practice matches to his 25,000+ followers. He also shared content on other games like his attempt to beat his personal best in Hades and live games of Dungeons & Dragons.

His last upload showed him play TETR.IO with his wife Heather and chatting with several fans.

The news of his demise sent shockwaves throughout the Tetris community.

Tetris Grandmaster Tomohiro Tatejima exclaimed his grief at this huge loss. Spelunky Designer Derek Yu said,
