Developer Explains Why You Need to be Always Online for Gran Turismo 7

Gran Turismo 7 is still a few months away, but we’re already getting to know more about the game. Recently, the creator confirmed that the single-player GT campaign mode would need a constant internet connection.

No explanation was provided for this requirement, and gamers were obviously puzzled as to why a single-player mode would need internet at all, let alone constantly. Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has now provided an explanation for this news.

According to him, GT7 will require a constant internet connection as the studio is looking to prevent “cheating.” Specifically, Yamauchi explained that the measure was taken so that players could not change the game’s save files. So, if a GT7 game mode will need access to the save file, it will also require an internet connection as a form of anti-piracy.

Also, the GT7 Campaign mode isn’t the only mode in the game that will require an online connection. GT7 Campaign, GT7 Café, and many others are tied to the save files, and all of them will likely also need an internet connection to play.

There seems to be only one mode in the entire game that players can play offline: Gran Turismo 7’s Arcade Mode. Yamauchi did state that he isn’t sure if this is wholly true, so you may also need an online connection for this mode.

Another feature present across all the modes that will need an online connection is the Livery feature. Players will have access to custom livery through Gran Turismo 7’s Livery Editor. This data will be stored and accessed online, so it will need a constant internet connection as well.

But, despite the fan’s frustration, this kind of anti-piracy isn’t new to the Gran Turismo franchise. It was also present in Gran Turismo Sport, the previous installment and title leading up to Gran Turismo 7.

The game was not received well, and the fact that players would need a constant internet connection to save their game only added to the list of complaints.

Yamauchi’s explanation is not likely to appease most Gran Turismo fans, and many will continue to express their frustration at this feature. Save files and livery could be handled offline, especially for modes that don’t require an internet connection at all.

It would also mean that the game will be unplayable once Sony shuts off the Gran Turismo 7 servers. It’s an annoying decision and made worse by the fact that similar complaints had popped up for Gran Turismo Sport.
