The April Update for PS5 Adds Cross-Gen Play, USB Game Storage and More!

The first ever major system update for the PS5 is dropping tomorrow and its adding features such as cross-gen share play, allowing you to download games onto extended storage – can’t play them though – access to an “improved game base”, and new trimmings for the mobile app.

With the new storage feature, users can download PS4 games onto an external hard-drive and also play them, keeping their SSD fairly free. But prior to this latest update, users could not add PS5 games to the external HDD. Now that feature has been enabled, but you can’t yet play the games from the external HDD.

The main aim of this feature is to reduce the number of times you need to re-download a game, allowing you to move the game between the PS5’s native SSD and your external hard-drive.

There is no support for M.2 drives yet, but Sony promises that it’s coming “in the future”. Hopefully, not too far off into the future. The second feature to this new update is the ability to share play between PS4 and PS5. Which means you can play next-gen games through your friend’s PS5, in case you haven’t been able to get your hands on a console as yet.

The game base updates brings several quality of life improvements which brings the party chat feature closer in operation to Discord. Users can now alter the individual member’s volume and disable game chat from the menu. Game updates will also be auto-downloaded onto your system if auto-updates have been enabled.

This won’t work if your console has been turned off, so it will have to be set in rest-mode. You can also hide games in your library and search through it, making it easier to access your list of games.

Trophy settings and the stat screen have also received a bit of an overhaul, as you can not customize the level of trophies which get automatic captures, saving you from deleting an enormous number of screenshots for the easiest bronze achievements. You can also access a summary of your trophy level and status.

Lastly, we come to the app. In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to join multiplayer sessions through it, manage your storage, compare trophy collections, and filter products in the store. The console will also receive a new accessibility feature in the form of no-limits for magnification.

This update is filled with features, but we’re hoping they add the ability to create folders and external PS5 hard-drive support soon.
