The original The Last of Us was praised up and down for its single-player story and came with an online multiplayer mode that was well received. Its sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, was also expected to have an online multiplayer mode, but it has been over a year since its release, and we have no official word on this mode.
Rumors have been circulating about this multiplayer being released as a standalone property, and now people are stating that it may also have a battle royale mode.
Spotted by Push Square, YouTuber Speclizer was looking through the assets that have been datamined from The Last of Us Part 2‘s single-player code, where they found a potential map for a battle royale mode.
This map would have incorporated areas from the single-player game. They also found evidence of a “compass,” a player count, and an emote wheel script, all common elements in battle royale games.
Other bits of evidence pointing to a battle royale mode includes various forms of gear that have been associated with the genre, hinting that players will need to loot armor and equipment. While all of this points to a battle royale mode for The Last of Us Part 2, it may not be a sure thing.
It may also be possible that this mode was considered but then later scrapped, as there is always a chance that we may never even get a multiplayer mode. So, The Last of Us Part 2 fans should look at all of this with healthy skepticism until we get some official word from Naughty Dog or Sony.
While we still don’t know if we’ll even get a multiplayer mode, it will be interesting to see what form it would take. A battle royale mode could easily be very lucrative for Naughty Dog and Sony.
Still, it is also evident that fans are expecting a The Last of Us Factions 2.0, an experience similar to the first games’ multiplayer taken to the next level.
