New World Doesn’t Have a Mini Map so These Players Made Their Own

If one thing is synonymous with MMOs, it’s an absolutely filled screen for various skills, inventory, powers, etc. But compared to the norm, New World’s interface is relatively sparse. Some may find this refreshing as it opens up more screen real estate, but replacing the standard mini-map with a Skyrim-style compass navigator hasn’t been something all fans are on board with. Two players, in particular, decided to take matters into their own hands.

Redditor Morbrid and their friend seemed to have enough of the fact that there was no mini-map in the game, so they did what any intrepid gamer with coding knowledge would do: they made their own.

The map they have created shows a portion of the game’s standard map in a small portion of the screen at all times. This is an excellent addition as opening up the main map repeatedly got a bit tedious.

The map itself seems to be fully functional, showing the location of vendors, resource nodes and also allowing you to zoom in and out at will.

Going by the comments on the post, it seems many players are relieved that at least someone is listening to their requests. But, there’s still the problem of whether New World would even allow these kinds of addons.

The lack of a mini-map seems to be a deliberate choice, maybe to encourage exploration. It’s also unclear what the game’s Terms of Service consider cheats or UI mods as and where they draw the line.

One of the most common complaints at the moment is that the map isn’t easy to use when in towns – it’s always zoomed out, or you can’t see anything because of the “Upcoming War” message. I teamed up with my friend to build a minimap to help improve on the map interface, stop us getting lost in towns and make it a bit more efficient to farm resources while out questing.

A lack of a mini-map isn’t the only problem players have been facing with Amazon’s MMO. Many have been experiencing long wait times to get into the game, and others have been getting banned for no proper reason. European players are also not happy that the studio prioritizes North American servers and schedules maintenance time between the days for Euro time zones.

The list of complaints about New World appears to keep growing, and Amazon should better start looking into the problems before they start to lose fans.
