Ubisoft confirms facing a cyberattack; is Lapsus$ to be blamed?

If you were wondering why the online services of Ubisoft were not working as intended in the past few days, you’d be shocked to find out the answer. After giants of the tech industry like Samsung and Nvidia suffered from cyberattacks in recent months, Ubisoft has now emerged as the most recent victim.

Ubisoft announced that it faced a “cyber security incident” last week that temporarily disrupted its online games, systems, and services. While the company has not directly blamed any hacker group for this attack, Lapsus$ itself took responsibility for the event by confirming the invasion on Telegram.

Last week, Ubisoft experienced a cyber security incident that caused temporary disruption to some of our games, systems, and services.

the company said in a statement yesterday.

Our IT teams are working with leading external experts to investigate the issue. As a precautionary measure, we initiated a company-wide password reset.

In contrast to the breach that Nvidia faced last week, Ubisoft should count itself lucky as any sensitive detail of its employees and personal player data is yet to be made public.

Fortunately, the problems faced by Ubisoft were limited to just the games and other services taking a hit, but those are rectified now, and things are back on a smooth track.

The company said,

We can confirm that all our games and services are functioning normally and that at this time, there is no evidence any player personal information was accessed or exposed as a by-product of this incident.

Ultimately, such episodes are a reminder of how fragile and unsafe the online world really is.

For now, all we can do is find refuge in the fact that Ubisoft is not taking this cyberattack lightly and has initiated a company-wide password reset as a precautionary step to ensure the current situation does not become a cesspool.

Hands with some leading external experts have also been joined to profoundly investigate the matter and make sure there’s no room for security breaches in the future.
