Ubisoft decides to skip E3 this year amidst a long list of absentees

E3 will return this year after a not-so-brief break of three years. The first of its kind since 2019 after the 2021 event was held online. The same ReedPop that produces the PAX, New York’s famous ComicCon and StarWars celebration, is hosting the event.

The E3 this year was expected to be a triumphant return, with all the big-money boys expecting to exploit the platform for increased exposure and brand value.

However, it was released earlier this year that there would be the marked absence of three big console companies: Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo, from the upcoming edition of E3 to be held from June 13th to June 16th, 2023.

Ubisoft has conveyed its absence from the “revamped” E3 in a new statement issued to Video Games Chronicles. It was stated that the company is now moving in a different direction and are looking to host their own “Ubisoft Forward Live” event on June 12th in Los Angeles itself.

Ubisoft was one of the only big developers who confirmed they would attend the event. However, their sudden backing out raises some eyebrows over the lineup of the revamped E3.

Even more concerning is that Ubisoft has been one of the staunch supporters of E3. CEO Yves Guillemot supported the 2023 plans for the E3.

It was also announced that the first two days of the expo would focus exclusively on business. The remaining days will be for the consumers and visitors.

ReedPop provided an update on the E3 stating that there will be unnamed AAA companies in addition to indie and tech and hardware firms who have committed to a presence in LACC.

The show would welcome back “publishers, developers, journalists, content creators, manufacturers, buyers, and licensors.” Despite this, many publishers aren’t supporting the event, which is barely a shadow of what it once was.

With less than three months to go until the event, this is probably the first time since its inception that the platform will not see any of the big production houses.

In the Ubisoft event, it is reported that there will be either gameplay footage or new information on the Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Crew Motorfest, which have been delayed this year.

This leaves “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” as this year’s major release for the developers. However, rumors are running amok about many new Assassin’s Creed games coming up.

E3 2023 might be a different affair this time around. It will be interesting to see how the event turns out, despite the absence of the big boys, and if they can live up to the standards they have set in the previous editions.
