Upcoming Intel Alder Lake Stock Cooler Tests Offer Promising Results

The recently launched Intel 12th Gen CPUs have received overwhelming praise from critics and consumers alike, but currently, only the high-end 125W K SKUs are available in the market. As of writing this, the i9 12900K, i7 12700K, and i5 12600K do not come bundled with a cooler, requiring consumers to purchase aftermarket coolers.

However, this will be changing soon as Intel will launch several 12th Gen models at CES, many that will come with a 65W TDP and a cooler in the box.

The question is if these stock coolers are good enough. Chinese news site NetEase, via Tom’s Hardware, tested out one of these new coolers with the upcoming i5 12400, and the results seemed to indicate that the cooler is a good setup compared to previous in-the-box coolers.

The unit looks impressive with a metal heatsink and plastic shroud surrounded by a blue ring at the top, giving it a black ice look. A copper core insert will sit on top of the CPU. Copper is a more effective conductor of heat than aluminum which are used by the low-end Intel coolers of the past.

If the temperatures reported with the test of the Core i5 12400, a highly anticipated chip that should offer amazing value and gaming performance, are accurate, then it looks like the CPU will run pretty cool as well.

An AIDA64 stress test got the CPU to a 73C at a 20°C ambient temperature. A 31000 RPM fan speed is a little concerning, as that would be pretty noisy, but the AIDA64 stress test is supposed to emulate the worst-case scenario. So, the fan shouldn’t be too intrusive for a gaming load.

The peak power consumption of 80W was also interesting to note as that is very impressive. If the Core i5 12400 delivers on all its performance promises, it could be a valuable addition to a budget gaming rig as it would require nothing more than a mid-range air cooler.

The 65W CPUs are expected to be announced next week, so we can expect the coolers to be shown simultaneously.
