Valheim Leviathan: A Guide on How to Farm and Use Chitin – Weapons & More

Valheim’s vast map has tons of resources for you to collect and craft. Although, some of them are pretty rare and hard to collect, you do need them to progress further into the game. One such item is Chitin collected from Leviathans in the ocean biome. With these Chitins collected, you might even be able to make a weapon to take down a certain ocean monster.

Your first order of business is to make a boat if you’re planning to visit the ocean biome. So, go and get to crafting before taking on the Leviathans. I know you might be thinking what even are the Leviathans? Are they harmful creatures? So, let’s get to some information about these mysterious creatures.

1. What are Leviathans? Where to Find Them in Valheim?

Leviathans, also known as Krakens are big ocean creatures/sea turtles found in the ocean biome of Valheim. Leviathans are completely harmless and appear as small islands floating on the ocean. Players can mine Abyssal Barnacles from them which can later be used to craft Chitin.

However, you need to be cautious about the Leviathans since the more you mine, more will the Leviathan sense you mining its shell and sink to the ocean floor. Make sure you have your boat ready to quickly swim towards, to avoid drowning.

Any kind of pickaxe can be used to mine Abyssal Barnacles but there is a chance of higher drop with the more upgraded ones. After you’ve collected the Barnacles, time to make some Chitin.

2. How to Make Chitin?

Chitin can be crafted from Abyssal Barnacles mined from Leviathans in the ocean. After gathering the Barnacles, players can head to the Workbench to make Chitin out of them.

Currently Chitins can be used to craft only two items: Abyssal Harpoon and the Abyssal Razor.

3. How to Use Chitin?

Chitins are used to craft only two weapons in Valheim and that are the Abyssal Harpoon and the Abyssal Razor. Both these items can be crafted using a Level 2 Workbench.

I. Abyssal Razor

Abyssal Razor is a knife type weapon crafted in Valheim. This knife does 12 pierce and 12 slash when used in close combat situations.

ItemMaterial Required
Abyssal Razor4x Fine Wood
20x Chitin
2x Leather Scraps

Although this knife is not that much of a damage dealer, you can always keep this one for your collections.

II. Abyssal Harpoon

The Abyssal Harpoon is a roped spear used to latch onto creatures in Valheim. Upon throwing, the harpoon does not only damage the creature but also latches onto it. This helps players catch and tame boars and also helps collect the Sea Serpent loots by dragging them to shore (otherwise the loot would sink to the ocean).

ItemMaterial Required
Abyssal Harpoon8x Fine Wood
30x Chitin
3x Leather Scraps

The harpoon is quite a useful weapon if you haven’t made serious progress in the game. It not only lets you latch onto animals but also prevents the Sea Serpents from sinking into the ocean with their collectable scales.

That’s all there is to farming Chitin in Valheim. Now that you know what to do, quickly get to mining and crafting.
