Newly Updated Valheim AI Hates Structures More than it Does Players

Viking survival mega-hit Valheim recently received a patch that brought maypoles and AI updations to the game’s Norse setting.

The patch notes also warned players that the patch would “make monsters slightly more aggressive and attack your buildings etc.”

However, what developers Iron Gate did not mention is that the monsters would attack only structures and ignore players altogether.

Valheim players on Reddit report that monsters have taken the “attacking buildings” part firmly to heart and don’t attack players unless players approach them first.

As you can see in HiEffort’s Reddit post below, a Draugr cannot decide between attacking the player or their stonewalled fort.

First, it seems to want to charge the player but somehow decides against it and takes a swing at the wall, then punches the door a bit, and then it goes back for the wall again.

The monster fully acknowledges the player only when they approach it for a shield bash.

Naturally, this ruins the game’s immersion levels a little bit. What’s more, HiEfforts’s post is full of comments that recount many more such instances, and some of them sound legitimately nuts.

In one such instance, Draugr began destroying their own village because they failed to find a hidden player.

“Just tonight, I watched a Draugr village destroy itself,” says Doomkauf.

“I was stealthed but they had seen me briefly, so they came charging out of their buildings, but because they couldn’t immediately find me, they turned around and started attacking their own structures.

Support beams, walls, whatever – they tore the entire place apart within minutes, with no intervention from me.”

Redditor Squatch11 had most of their base destroyed. “Earlier today I had a troll invasion and I had 3 trolls attacking my base nonstop. I literally couldn’t get them to attack me. Half of my base was destroyed before I managed to kill them.”

All this unnecessary monster mayhem has led many players to demand that the AI be restored to how it was before the update. But that could take a while, as Iron Gate is currently on summer vacation.

But, since it is clearly outlined in their update’s patch notes that monsters will attack buildings, the real question is this: Is this monster behavior a bug, or did Iron Gate intend for all this chaos to occur?

Guess we’ll find out only when Iron Gate return from their much-needed break. Until then, better keep your eyes peeled for structure-destroying beasts.
